Starting with 12 analog sketches, the initial concept was understanding how to take simplified geometric forms of lines, shapes, and colors to create patterns. Then, expanding this concept, 3-4 layouts were created to achieve fundamentals of balance in movement to draw graphic grid-based patterns. Finally, a digital application was applied to these geometric designs using vector illustration tools.
This project began with coming up with a unique grid of shape-based patterns. Sketching my ideas after doing some research on other patterns online really helped me get a start. Having not used Illustrator before, it was a challenge initially to translate my ideas into the program, and selecting a color palette was also a challenge. I researched and sketched.
Once I did that, I saw what worked in Illustrator with my chosen color palette and built off of those ideas. I never really thought much about pattern design like this and how cool it could turn out, but now that I see the final product, it gives me a new perspective on how these designs could be applied to different projects.
