For this project, I created a short illustrative animation using traditional rotoscoping techniques and a combination of digital processes and workflows. This is a combination of a video I captured with my drone of a 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback, and a stock video of the ocean. I then motion-tracked text into the background and applied various filters to both videos to create the inverting visuals seen above.
I explored both the conceptual and practical sides of rotoscoping, looking at how it could be used for compositing and illustration. I worked mainly with Adobe After Effects. At the beginning, I spent time learning what rotoscoping is, its history, and how it’s applied in today’s creative work. Studying the approaches of other artists helped me understand the technique’s potential and gave me inspiration. That research was key in helping me navigate the many possibilities and define the direction of my own project.
